Double Chin – Neck Liposuction: Causes and Treatments

People do not all develop double chin the same way, nor they will need the same procedures to treat it. Double Chins are a fairly common condition wherein a layer of fat forms below the chin. Many people are not comfortable with the way the double chin appears as well as how it feels, and often seek solutions to rectify this feature, either through active weight loss or via surgery.

It is erroneously believed that only people who have a curvier build may be prone to this condition, there are a number of factors that influence the formation of this feature. Genetics could be a cause of double chins. Weight gain, bone structure, muscle tone and ageing are factors that influence the formation of double chins. Aging changes the structure of the skin and the subsequent loss of collagen results in sagging. Fat accumulation and fluid retention increase soft tissue volume in an undesirable manner. Owing to the different causes leading to the formation of double chins, treatments need to be modified according to each patient.

The Importance of Tissue Evaluation

The correct assessment of the tissue components is a key step in gauging the best way a double chin can be treated.

The following areas need to be assessed:

  • Bone Structure
The chin size is variable, some have a larger bone structure whereas some are more petite. A small chin may cause redundancy of soft tissues.
  • Muscles
The amount of muscle varies in each person, and treatments must be modified accordingly.
  • Fat pads
The presence of fat pads under and above the platysma muscle changes from person to person, hence, the surgeon must take this factor into account.
  • Skin excess
Aging can cause an increase in skin laxity, and the correct removal of excess skin is important to ensure the procedure produces the desired results.

Types of Chin-Neck Liposuction

Chin Augmentation

Often a double chin can occur if the patient suffers from skeletal deficines such as a recessed or weak chin region. In cases such as these, the patient would often require chin augmentation with fillers, fat grafting, implants or chin enhancement surgery which is also known as genioplasty.

This type of surgery works on incorporating an implant into the patient’s chin bone to harmonise out the features, so that the result is a streamlined balanced out neck region.

Neck Corset Platysmaplasty

There is a thin sheet muscle that is located just under the skin of the neck and jawline which is called the platysma. Over time the platysma begins to sag, which then leads to issues such as a double chin, turkey necks and jowls.

Patients with this sort of muscle issues required what is termed as neck corset platysmaplasty. This type of surgery works on tightening and reconstructing the muscle to rejuvenate the neck region, erase double chins and which leads to a more aesthetically pleasing neckline.

Neck Liposuction

Most commonly, when the double chin is the cause of excessive fat accumulation, then the condition can be resolved with liposuction. This procedure takes less than 90 minutes, and is performed under local anesthetic and sedation.

Through the use of cannulas excess fat is removed, and the jawline is redefined to reveal a smoother, firmer and contoured neck. However, it must be noted that liposuction results may vary depending on the skin quality, elasticity and skin excess.

Non-Surgical Treatments and Radiofrequency

For patients who have only a mild excess of skin, non-surgical treatments, such a radiofrequency, coolsculpting etc. can be used to tighten and firm skin without having to undergo surgery. The recovery period for such treatments is very short and suits a busy lifestyle.
