Eyelid Surgery
Blepharoplasty, the medical term for the eyelid surgery, has been growing in popularity in recent years is one of the most common procedures in plastic surgery in middle aged men and women.
Your eyelids
Eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes by restoring a natural, more youthful appearance. It corrects the effects of ageing and provides long lasting freshness in periorbital and facial rejuvenation.
As part of the normal ageing, the skin of the eyelids may sag and become loose. Excess fatty tissue in the upper and lower eyelids may lead to puffyness and the development of eye bags.
All tissues in the periorbital region will undergo changes over time and surrounding structures may affect each other, for intance the appearance of a drooping upper lid may also be due to relaxation of the forehead skin and eyebrow.

Blepharoplasty techniques have evolved and fat is redistributed to other areas around the eyes. Restoring the volume is key to restore fulness in areas of fat loss which are lacking fulness. Fat grafting and fillers are also commonly used in periorbital rejuvenation.
The purpose of a lower blepharoplasty is to improve the appearance of sagging skin and fat bags under the eyes. It can also correct the eyelid position when drooping lower eyelids reveal the white part of the eye below the iris, and excess skin and fine wrinkles.

Upper eyelid Surgery
Upper eyelid surgery involves correcting heavy “hooded” eyelids and can treat:
• loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision.
• excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids.
• volume loss around the orbital rim that causes the sunken appearance on the eyes. In this procedure, an incision within the natural crease on the eyelid allows for removal or repositioning of fat deposits, tightening of muscles, and removal of excess skin. The recovery period for this surgery is fairly short and you can go home a few hours after the surgery. The results are long-lasting.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
The purpose of a lower blepharoplasty is to improve the appearance of sagging skin and fat bags under the eyes. It can also correct the eyelid position when drooping lower eyelids reveal the white part of the eye below the iris, and excess skin and fine wrinkles.
In this procedure, an incision is made just below the lower lash line. Through this incision, excess skin in the lower eyelid is removed.
The excess fat can be repositioned or removed. Alternatively, a hidden incision, called transconjunctival incision, is created on the inside of the lower eyelid, to redistribute or remove excess fat. However, with this technique, no skin is removed.
Lower eyelid surgery consists of a day surgery procedure, so you can go home after anaesthetic recovery, most often local anaesthesia and sedation
Double Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery is popular around the world, especially in Asian countries. Asian blepharoplasty, also known as double eyelid surgery, is designed to create a crease in the upper eyelid that brightens and enhances the contour of the eyes. It makes them appear bigger and younger looking.
Possible risks with Eyelid surgery
Despite the highest standards of surgical practice, complications are possible. The decision to have eyelid surgery is extremely personal. You’ll have to decide if the benefits will achieve your goals and if the risks and potential complications are acceptable. Dr Rodrigo will explain the risks associated with surgery. Even though most patients will not have complications, you should discuss your concerns about possible side effects.
Some of the general side effects are allergic reactions, excessive swelling and bruising, bleeding, infection, blood clots, slow healing, skin and tissue necrosis (especially in smokers), pain and discomfort. Similarly, there are specific complications, for example: dryness to the eyes, sensitivity to sun or other bright light, difficulty closing your eyes, ectropion, pulling down of the lower eyelid, temporary or even permanent change in vision, and very rare chance of blindness. Droopy eyelids and vision obstruction
Another reason my patients choose blepharoplasty is functional, as droopy upper lids with severe skin hooding can reduce side vision (peripheral vision), especially the upper and outer parts of your visual field. Blepharoplasty can reduce or eliminate these vision obstructions and make your eyes appear younger and more alert.
What Treatments Can Be Combined With Eyelid Surgery?
Drooped eyebrows and deep temples are commonly seen in periorbital rejuvenation. Narrowing of the brow-lash distance creates a hooded look in the upper eyelid, with the skin fold covering the upper lid crease.
Micro fat grafting has become a powerful tool for the treatment of periorbital ageing, the region around the eyes. Facial fat grafting or lipofilling, uses your own fat tissue to restore the volume lost. The fat is carefully removed from other parts of your body and purified before re-injection with fine cannulas. That process optimises fat quality and fat survival to achieve more predictable and consistent results.
